When he found himself moving along the unfamiliar path, he slowed down, and his actions became erratic: start, pause, double back, turn around and then forward again, until finally he was in the cul-de-sac that informed him with a mild shock that he had made a mistake. At this point, instead of turning back to find an alternate route, he began to move in circles, squeaking like a phonograph needle scratched across the grooves. He threw himself against the walls of the maze, again and again, leaping up, twisting over backwards and falling, and throwing himself again. At the gate, I paused to watch as she straightened up to catch her breath. Seeing her face made me tremble, but it was not the face I had struggled so hard to recall. Her hair had become white and streaked with iron, and the flesh of her thin cheeks was wrinkled.	Я подошел к калитке и, увидев ее лицо, вздрогнул. I'm forgetting things I learned recently.	Начал забывать то, что узнал совсем недавно.
It seems to be following the classic pattern, the last things learned are first things forgotten. Or is that the pattern? Better look it up again.	Классический образец - недавнее забывается легче всего.
Reread my paper on the Algernon-Gordon Effect and even though I know I wrote it, I keep feeling it was writ-ten by someone else.	Перечитал свою статью "Эффект Элджернона -Гордона". Знаю, что написал ее именно я, но все равно кажется, что это был кто-то другой.
Most of it I don't even understand.	Я в ней почти ничего не понял.
But why am I so irritable?	Но почему я стал таким раздражительным?

The wastebasket was in my way, and so were the chairs, and I thought she had moved them.	То мне под ноги попадется корзина для мусора, то кресло...

Перед тем как канал со вздохом закрывается на ночь, - маленькая проповедь, потом - гимн на фоне развевающегося звездно-полосатого флага... И наконец - сетка, глядящая на меня сквозь маленькое квадратное окошко...
Why am I always looking at life through a window?	Почему я все время смотрю на жизнь сквозь оконное стекло?
And after it's all over I'm sick with myself because there is so little time left for me to read and write and think, and because I should know better than to drug my mind with this dishonest stuff that's aimed at the child in me.	Потом я начинаю злиться на себя, ведь мне осталось так мало времени, чтобы написать что-нибудь, почитать или просто подумать. I thought a lot about the things Alice said, and then it hit me that if I kept on reading and learning new things, even while I was forgetting the old ones, I would be able to keep some of my intelligence. At first I thought it was a silly book because if he wasnt crazy he could see that windmills werent dragons and there is no such thing as sorcerers and enchanted castles but then I re-memberd that there was something else it was all supposed to mean-something the story didnt say but only hinted at.	Сначала мне показалось что это глупая книга потому что если бы он не был чокнутым то не принял бы мельницы за драконов и знал бы что не существует волшебников и заколдованных замков но потом вспомнил что все это должно означать еще что-то - про что не пишется в книге а только намекается.

That made me angry because I think I used to know.	Я разозлился потому что раньше знал.
But Im keeping up with my reading and learning new things every day and I know its going to help me.	Я продолжаю читать и каждый день узнаю что то новое и знаю это поможет мне.
I know I should have written some progress reports before this so they will know whats happening to me.	Нужно писать отчеты чтобы в лаборатории знали что происходит со мной.
But writing is harder.	Но писать все труднее и труднее.

I forgot to write in yesterdays report about the woman from the building across the alley one floor down.	Вчера я забыл на писать про женщину которая жывет в доме на против на один этаж ниже.
I saw her through my kitchen window last week.	Я увидел ее из окна кухни на прошлой неделе.
I dont know her name, or even what her top part looks like but every night about eleven oclock she goes into her bath-room to take a bath.	Я не знаю как ее зовут и даже как выгледит ее верхняя часть но каждый вечер около одинацати она входит в ванную и моеца под душем.
She never pulls her shade down and thru my window when I put out my lights I can see her from the neck down when she comes out of the bath to dry herself.	Она ни когда не задергивает занавеску и из моево окна когда гашу свет я вижу ее от шеи в низ когда она вытираеца полотенцем.
It makes me excited, but when the lady turns out the light I feel let down and lonely.	Мне интересно но когда леди гасит свет мне становица тоскливо и одиноко.
I wish I could see what she looks like sometimes, whether shes pretty or what.	Мне хочеца увидеть какое у нее лицо красива она или нет.

Mrs Mooney is very worried about me.	Мисис Муни беспокоица про меня.
She says the way I lay around all day and dont do anything I re-mind her of her son before she threw him out of the house.	Она сказала то как я лежу целыми днями и ни чево не делаю на поминает ей ее сына как раз перед тем как он вы бросился из окна.

She said she dont like loafters.	Она сказала ей не нравяца лентяи.
If Im sick its one thing but if Im a loafter thats another thing and she has no use for me. I told her I think Im sick.	Если я болею это одно дело а если без дельничаю это совсем другое и я ей такой не нужен Я сказал мне кажеца я за болел.
I try to read a little bit every day mostly stories but sometimes I have to read the same thing over and over again because I dont know what it means.	Я стараюсь а не могу читать расказы но иногда мне приходица читать ево снова и с нова я ни как не могу понять про што он.
And its hard to write.	И трудно писать.
I know I should look up all the words in the dic-tionary but Im so tired all the time.	Я знаю што нужно сматреть слова в словаре но я все время усталый.
Then I got the idea that I would only use the easy words instead of the long hard ones.	Мне пришла мысль што надо пользаца маленькими словами а не длиными.

He asked me did I have any friends or relatives and I said no I dont have any.	Он спросил есть у меня друзья или родствиники а я сказал нет у меня ни ково нет.
I told him I had a friend called Algernon once but he was a mouse and we use to run races together.	Я сказал ему што у меня был друг Элджернон и мы с ним бегали на пере гонки.
He looked at me kind of funny like he thot I was crazy.	Он по смотрел на меня как бутто я чокнулся.
He smiled when I told him I use to be a genius. He talked to me like I was a baby and he winked at Mrs Mooney.	Я сказал ему што был гением а он улыбнулся он гаварил со мной как с ребенком и под мигивал мисис Муни.
I got mad because he was making fun of me and laughing and I chased him out and locked the door.	Я расирдился потомушто он издивалси над мной вы гнал ево и запер дверь.

I told her I dont want to use there money any more.	Я сказал ей што больше не хочю пользоваца ихними деньгами.
She said moneys money and someone has to pay or I have to put you out.	Она сказала деньги есть деньги и кто то должен платить а то я вы селю тебя.
Then she said why dont I get some job instead of just hanging around.	Потом она сказала найди себе работу в место штобы болтаца без дела.
I dont know any work but the job I use to do at the bakery.	Я не знаю ни какой работы кроме што я делал в пикарне.
I dont want to go back their because they all knew me when I was smart and maybe theyll laff at me.	Я не хочю вазвращяца туда потомушто они знают што я был умный и будут смияца над мной.
But I dont know what else to do to get money. And I want to pay for everything myself.	Я не знаю што ещо делать штобы за работать деньги а я хочю платить за все сам.

I was looking at some of my old progress reports and its very strange but I cant read what I wrote.	Хотел по читать свои старые отчеты и это страно но я не могу читать што на писал.
I can make out some of the words but they dont make sense.	Я могу разобрать не которые слова но они ни чево не значют.
I think I wrote them but I dont remember so good.	Мне кажеца это я их на писал но я не помню.
I get tired very fast when I try to read some of the books I baught in the drugstore.	Когда я стараюсь читать книги которые купил в аптеке то с разу устаю.
Exept the ones with the picturs of the pretty girls.	Кроме тех где есть картинки с красивыми девушками.
I like to look at them but I have funny dreams about them.	Мне нравица смотреть на них но потом у меня чюдные сны.
Its not nice.	Это не хорошо.
I wont buy them any more.	Не буду больше их покупать.
I saw in one of those books they got magic powder that can make you strong and smart and do lots of things.	Я про читал што сделали валшебный парашок от которого человек делаеца сильным и умным и может сделать много всево.

Mr Donner was very nice when I came back and askd him for my old job at the bakery.	Мистер Доннер очень удивился когда я пришол к нему и по просил старую работу.
Frist he was very suspicius but I told him what happened to me and then he looked very sad and put his hand on my shoulder and said Charlie you got guts.	С начала он был подо зрителен а потом я расказал ему про што со мной было и он стал печальный положыл мне руку на плечо и сказал Чярли ты просто молодец.

Evrybody looked at me when I came downstairs and started working in the toilet sweeping it out like I use to do.	Все смотрели на меня когда я с пустился в низ и начял мыть сортир как раньше.
I said to myself Charlie if they make fun of you dont get sore because you remember their not so smart like you once thot they were.	Я сказал себе Чярли если они будут смияца над тобой не абращяй внимания потомушто они не такие уш умники как тебе казалось с начала.

I got so afraid I felt like I was gonna cry but I didnt and then I had to go to the bathroom something awful. My stomack was all twisting inside like I was gonna bust open if I didnt go right away... because I couldnt hold it back. But then Joe Carp came in and grabbed Klaus by the shirt and said leave him alone you lousy bastard or Ill brake your neck.	Пришол Джо Карп с хватил Клауса за рубаху и сказал от стань от нево а то я с верну тебе шейю ты вшывый ублюдок.
Charlie is a good guy and nobodys gonna start up with him without answering for it.	Чярли атличный парень и ни кто не будет из деваца над ним без наказано.
I felt ashamed and I ran to the toilet to clean myself and change my cloths.	Мне было стыдно и я по бежал почистица и пере одеца.
When I got back Frank was there to and Joe was telling him about it and then Gimpy came in and they told him about it and he said theyd get rid of Klaus.	Когда я вернулся пришол Фрэнк и Джимпи и Джо расказал им и они сказали надо гнать Клауса к чортовой матери.
They were gonna tell Mr Donner to fire him.	Они хотели сказать мистеру Доннеру штобы он выгнал ево.
I told them I dint think he should be fired and have to find another job because he had a wife and a kid. And besides he said he was sorry for what he did to me. And I remember how sad I was when I had to get fired from the bakery and go away.	Я сказал им не нужно вы гонять ево потомушто у нево жена и рибенок.
I said Klaus shoud get a second chance because now he wouldnt do anything bad to me anymore.	Я сказал надо дать Клаусу шанс потомушто теперь он не сделает мне ни чево плохово.
Later Gimpy came over limping on his bad foot and he said Charlie if anyone bothers you or trys to take advantage you call me or Joe or Frank and we will set him strait.	Потом Джимпи при хромал ко мне на деревяной ноге и сказал Чярли если кто будет при ставать к тебе скажы мне Джо или Фрэнку и мы при ведем тово в чуство.

I did a dumb thing today I forgot I wasnt in Miss Kinnians class at the adult center any more like I use to be.	Я севодня сделал глупую штуку я забыл што я не хожу к мис Кинниан в центр для взрослых как раньше.
I went in and sat down in my old seat in the back of the room and she lookd at me funny and she said Charlie where have you been.	Я пришол сел на старое место и она чюдно по смотрела на меня и сказала Чярли где ты был.
So I said hello Miss Kinnian Im redy for my lessen today only I lossed the book we was using.	А я сказал привет мис Кинниан я готов учица только я по терял книшку.
She started to cry and run out of the room and everbody looked at me and I saw alot of them wasnt the same pepul who use to be in my class.	Она за плакала и у бежала из класа и все стали гледеть на меня и я увидил што почти все они не из моево класа.
Then all of a suddin I remembered some things about the operashun and me getting smart and I said holy smoke I reely pulled a Charlie Gordon that time.	Тут я с разу вспомнил коешто про апирацыю и как я был умным и сказал ну и штука каково Чярли Гордона я от мочил.
I went away before she came back to the room.	Я ушол пока она ещо не вернулась.

Thats why Im going away from here for good to the Warren Home school.	По этому я уежаю на всегда в Уоррен.
I dont want to do nothing like that agen.	Не хочю с нова быть глупым.
I dont want Miss Kinnian to feel sorry for me.	Я не хочю штобы мис Кинниан желела меня.
I know evrybody feels sorry for me at the bakery and I dont want that eather so Im going someplace where they are a lot of other pepul like me and nobody cares that Charlie Gordon was once a genus and now he cant even reed a book or rite good.	Я знаю што в пикарне то же все желеют меня и я уежаю туда где много таких людей как я и ни ково не валнует што Чярли Г ордон раньше был гений а сичас не может читать книгу.
Im taking a cuple of books along and even if I cant reed them Ill practise hard and mabye Ill even get a littel bit smarter then I was before the operashun without an operashun.	Я возьму пару книг с собой пусть я не могу читать я буду трудица и может даже стану чютьчють умнее чем был до апирацыи без апирацыи.
I got a new rabits foot and a luky penny and even a littel bit of that majic powder left and mabye they will help me.	У меня есть новая заечья лапка и щесливое пенни и даже асталось не много волшебного парашка и может они по могут мне.

Im glad I got a second chanse in life like you said to be smart because I lerned alot of things that I never even new were in this werld and Im grateful I saw it all even for a littel bit.	Я рат што у меня был второй шанс как вы сказали я был умным и вы учил уйму всево чево я не знал што есть на свете и я рат што кое што по видал.
And Im glad I found out all about my family and me.	Хорошо што я вспомнил про маму и папу и Норму и про себя.
It was like I never had a family til I remembird about them and saw them and now I know I had a family and I was a person just like evryone.	Ведь было как бутто у меня не было семьи пока я не вспомнил про них и увидил их и сичас я знаю што у меня были родные и я был человек как все.
I dont no why Im dumb agen or what I did rong.	Я не знаю пачиму я с нова стал глупым или што я сделал не так как надо.
Mabye its because I dint try hard enuf or just some body put the evel eye on me.	Может это по тому што я не очень старался или кто то с глазил меня.
But if I try and practis very hard mabye Ill get a littel smarter and no what all the words are.	Но если я буду трудица как следует может я стану умнее и у знаю што азначяют все слова.
I remembir a littel bit how nice I had a feeling with the blue book that I red with the toren cover.	Я помню как здорово было читать галубую книгу с порваной аблошкой.
And when I close my eyes I think about the man who tored the book and he looks like me only he looks different and be talks different but I dont think its me because its like I see him from the window.	А когда я за крываю глаза я думаю про человека каторый по рвал аблошку и он пахош на меня только он вы гледит и гаварит по другому и мне кажеца што это не я потомушто я в роде как вижу ево из окна.
Anyway thats why Im gone to keep trying to get smart so I can have that feeling agen.	Чесное слово я буду стараца стать умным штобы мне с нова стало харошо.
Its good to no things and be smart and I wish I new evrything in the hole world.	Как здорово знать и быть умным и я хочю знать все в мире.
I wish I coud be smart agen rite now.	Я хочю стать умным с разу.

If I coud I woud sit down and reed all the time.	Если бы я мог я сидел бы и читал все время.
Anyway I bet Im the frist dumb persen in the world who found out some thing inportent for sience.	Спорим што я первый слабо умный в мире каторый сделал кое што важное для науки.
I did somthing but I dont remembir what.	Я сделал штото я не помню што.
So I gess its like I did it for all the dumb pepul like me in Warren and all over the world.	Мне кажеца я сделал это для всех людей таких как я.
