The dew fell from the trees till there was no more left to fall, and the booming went on, and the ground rocked and shivered, and Little Toomai put his hands up to his ears to shut out the sound. But it was all one gigantic jar that ran through him – this stamp of hundreds of heavy feet on the raw earth. Once or twice he could feel Kala Nag and all the others surge forward a few strides, and the thumping would change to the crushing sound of juicy green things being bruised, but in a minute or two the boom of feet on hard earth began again.

Before Little Toomai had got the ringing out of his head, before even he had shifted his position, there was not an elephant in sight except Kala Nag, Pudmini, and the elephant with the rope-galls, and there was neither sign nor rustle nor whisper down the hillsides to show where the others had gone.
Little Toomai stared again and again (Маленький Тумаи вглядывался снова и снова; to stare – пристально смотреть, вглядываться). The clearing, as he remembered it, had grown in the night (расчищенный участок, насколько он запомнил его /прежде/, вырос = расширился за эту ночь; to grow – расти, вырастать). Little Toomai stared again and again. The clearing, as he remembered it, had grown in the night. More trees stood in the middle of it, but the undergrowth and the jungle grass at the sides had been rolled back. Little Toomai stared once more. Now he understood the trampling. The elephants had stamped out more room – had stamped the thick grass and juicy cane to trash, the trash into slivers, the slivers into tiny fibers, and the fibers into hard earth.
“Wah (вах)!” said Little Toomai, and his eyes were very heavy (и его глаза = веки отяжелели). “Kala Nag, my lord, let us keep by Pudmini and go to Petersen Sahib’s camp (Кала Наг, господин мой, будем держаться близ Падмини и пойдем к лагерю Петерсену Сахиба; to keep – держать; держаться, оставаться), or I shall drop from thy neck (а то я упаду с твоей шеи).”
The third elephant watched the two go away (третий слон посмотрел, как двое уходят), snorted, wheeled round, and took his own path (фыркнул, повернулся и пошел своей дорогой; to snort – храпеть /о животных/; фыркать /выражая недовольство, пренебрежение/; to wheel – катить, везти; поворачивать/ся/; wheel – колесо). He may have belonged to some little native king’s establishment (вероятно, он принадлежал какому-нибудь мелкому туземному королю = правителю; to establish – учреждать; establishment – создание, учреждение; штат, личный состав), fifty or sixty or a hundred miles away (/жившему/ в пятидесяти-шестидесяти или = а может быть, и в сотне миль отсюда).
“Wah!” said Little Toomai, and his eyes were very heavy. “Kala Nag, my lord, let us keep by Pudmini and go to Petersen Sahib’s camp, or I shall drop from thy neck.”
The third elephant watched the two go away, snorted, wheeled round, and took his own path. He may have belonged to some little native king’s establishment, fifty or sixty or a hundred miles away.

Little Toomai’s face was gray and pinched, and his hair was full of leaves and drenched with dew, but he tried to salute Petersen Sahib, and cried faintly: “The dance – the elephant dance! I have seen it, and – I die!” As Kala Nag sat down, he slid off his neck in a dead faint.

See, Sahib, where Pudmini’s leg-iron cut the bark of that tree (видите, Сахиб, где ножная цепь Падмини сорвала кору с того дерева; to cut – резать, разрезать)! Yes; she was there too (да, она тоже была здесь).”

“Forty years and five (сорок лет и /еще/ пять),” said Machua Appa, “have I followed, my lord, the elephant (я, мой господин, хожу за слонами), but never have I heard that any child of man had seen what this child has seen (но никогда не слышал, чтобы ребенок человека видел то, что видел этот ребенок). By all the Gods of the Hills (/клянусь/ всеми Богами Гор), it is – what can we say (это – что мы можем сказать)?” and he shook his head (и он покачал головой; to shake – трясти/сь/; качать /головой/).
When they got back to camp it was time for the evening meal (когда они вернулись в лагерь, было время вечерней трапезы). And the big brown elephant catchers, the trackers and drivers and ropers (большие = сильные коричневые ловцы, охотники, погонщики скота, канатчики; to catch – ловить, поймать; to track – выслеживать; track – след; to drive – везти, перевозить; гнать; to rope – привязывать веревкой; rope – веревка), and the men who know all the secrets of breaking the wildest elephants (и люди, которые знают все секреты укрощения самых диких слонов; to break – ломать, разбивать; укрощать), passed him from one to the other (передавали его от одного к другому; to pass – проходить, проезжать; передавать), and they marked his forehead with blood from the breast of a newly killed jungle-cock (и мазали ему на лбу знак кровью из груди только что убитой куропатки; to mark – ставить знак, метку; new – новый; newly – заново, вновь; недавно), to show that he was a forester, initiated and free of all the jungles (чтобы показать, что он – обитатель лесов, посвященный /во все тайны/ и свободный /в перемещении/ по всем джунглям; forest – лес; forester – лесник; обитатель лесов, лесной житель; to initiate – вводить в курс дела; посвящать в /тайну/, давать /духовную/ инициацию).
Big Toomai had come up hotfoot from the camp in the plains to search for his son and his elephant, and now that he had found them he looked at them as though he were afraid of them both. And at last, when the flames died down, and the red light of the logs made the elephants look as though they had been dipped in blood too, Machua Appa, the head of all the drivers of all the Keddahs – Machua Appa, Petersen Sahib’s other self, who had never seen a made road in forty years: Machua Appa, who was so great that he had no other name than Machua Appa, – leaped to his feet, with Little Toomai held high in the air above his head, and shouted: “Listen, my brothers. Listen, too, you my lords in the lines there, for I, Machua Appa, am speaking!
This little one shall no more be called Little Toomai (этого малыша больше не будут называть Маленький Тумаи), but Toomai of the Elephants (/отныне/ он – Слоновый Тумаи), as his great-grandfather was called before him (как называли до него его прадеда). What never man has seen he has seen through the long night (всю долгую ночь = ночь напролет он видел = созерцал то, чего никогда /не/ видел /ни/ один человек), and the favor of the elephant-folk and of the Gods of the Jungles is with him (милость слоновьего народа и Богов Джунглей – с ним; favor – благосклонность, милость). He shall become a great tracker (он станет великим охотником). He shall become greater than I, even I, Machua Appa (он станет более великим, чем я, – даже я, Мачуа Аппа)! He shall follow the new trail, and the stale trail, and the mixed trail, with a clear eye (он будет следовать = распознавать новые следы, старые следы, смешанные следы /слонов/ своим ясным взглядом; stale – несвежий, чeрствый)! He shall take no harm in the Keddah when he runs under their bellies to rope the wild tuskers (ему не причинят вреда в кеддахе, когда он будет пробегать под их животами, чтобы накинуть веревку на дикого зверя; harm – вред; belly – живот, брюхо; to rope – связывать веревкой; tusker – животное с клыками, бивнями); and if he slips before the feet of the charging bull elephant (и если он поскользнется перед ногами нападающего слона-буйвола; to slip – скользить; to charge – заряжать; нападать, атаковать), the bull elephant shall know who he is and shall not crush him (этот слон-буйвол будет знать, кто он такой, и не раздавит его; to crush – давить, жать).
This little one shall no more be called Little Toomai, but Toomai of the Elephants, as his great-grandfather was called before him. What never man has seen he has seen through the long night, and the favor of the elephant-folk and of the Gods of the Jungles is with him. He shall become a great tracker. He shall become greater than I, even I, Machua Appa! He shall follow the new trail, and the stale trail, and the mixed trail, with a clear eye! He shall take no harm in the Keddah when he runs under their bellies to rope the wild tuskers; and if he slips before the feet of the charging bull elephant, the bull elephant shall know who he is and shall not crush him.
Aihai (ай-ай)! my lords in the chains (мои господа в цепях),” – he whirled up the line of pickets (он повернулся к ряду кольев; to whirl – вертеть/ся/) – “here is the little one that has seen your dances in your hidden places (вот малыш, который видел ваши танцы в ваших тайных местах; to hide – прятать/ся/, скрывать/ся/), – the sight that never man saw (зрелище, которое никогда /еще не/ видел /ни один/ человек; sight – зрение; вид, зрелище)! Give him honor, my lords (воздайте ему почести, мои господа)! Salaam karo, my children (салаам каро, мои дети). Make your salute to Toomai of the Elephants (салютуйте Слоновому Тумаи)! Gunga Pershad, ahaa (Ганга Першад, ахаа)! Hira Guj (Хира Гудж), Birchi Guj (Бирчи Гадж), Kuttar Guj, ahaa (Каттар Гадж, ахаа)! Pudmini, – thou hast seen him at the dance (Падмини, ты видела его во время танца), and thou too, Kala Nag, my pearl among elephants (и ты тоже, Кала Наг, моя жемчужина среди слонов)! – ahaa (ахаа)! Together (/все/ вместе)! To Toomai of the Elephants (Слоновому Тумаи). Barrao (баррао)!”
Aihai! my lords in the chains,” – he whirled up the line of pickets – “here is the little one that has seen your dances in your hidden places, – the sight that never man saw! Give him honor, my lords! Salaam karo, my children. Make your salute to Toomai of the Elephants! Gunga Pershad, ahaa! Hira Guj, Birchi Guj, Kuttar Guj, ahaa! Pudmini, – thou hast seen him at the dance, and thou too, Kala Nag, my pearl among elephants! – ahaa! Together! To Toomai of the Elephants. Barrao!”

But it was all for the sake of Little Toomai (но все это было в честь Маленького Тумаи), who had seen what never man had seen before (который видел то, чего раньше не видел ни один человек) – the dance of the elephants at night (танцы слонов ночью), and alone in the heart of the Garo hills (и /видел/ один в самом сердце гор Гаро)!
And at that last wild yell the whole line flung up their trunks till the tips touched their foreheads, and broke out into the full salute – the crashing trumpet-peal that only the Viceroy of India hears, the Salaamut of the Keddah.
