At the beginning of things (на заре мира: «в начале всех вещей»), He-who-was-first-Created (Тот-кто-был-первым-Сотворен = Созданный Первым) found himself living alone (обнаружил себя живущим в одиночку = понял, что существует один). The earth was here before him (земля была здесь перед ним), clothed in green grass and thick forests (одетая зеленой травой и густыми лесами), and peopled with the animal tribes (и заселенная стадами животных; to people — заселять, населять; tribe — племя; клан, род; семейство; поколение). Then all these spoke one language (тогда все говорили на одном языке; these — эти; to speak), and the Lonely One was heralded by them (и они разносили весть об Одиноком; to herald — возвещать, разносить весть о ком-либо, чем-либо; herald — герольд; глашатай) everywhere as he roamed (везде, где он бродил) to and fro over the world (туда-сюда по миру; to and fro), both upon dry land (и на суше: «и на сухой земле») and in the depths of the sea (и в глубинах моря).

One day, when he returned to his teepee from a long wandering, he felt a pain in his left foot, and discovered a splinter in the great toe! He-who-was-first-Created at once came forth and took up the infant, who was the Boy Man, the father of the human race here upon earth.

Now the little Boy Man grew and flourished (ну а маленький Юный Человек рос и развивался: «процветал»), and was perfectly happy (и был полностью счастлив) under the wise guidance of his friend (под мудрым руководством своего друга; to guide — вести, быть чьим-либо проводником; руководить) and Elder Brother (и Старшего Брата). Now the little Boy Man grew and flourished, and was perfectly happy under the wise guidance of his friend and Elder Brother. Although he had neither father nor mother, and only animals for playmates, it is said that no child born of human parents has ever led so free and happy a life as he. Sometimes they challenged him to friendly contests, whereupon He-who-was-first-Created taught his little brother how to outwit them by clever tricks and devices. This he was often able to do; but not always; for sometimes the animals by their greater strength finally overcame him.

He-who-was-first-Created now turned himself into a King-fisher (Созданный Первым тогда превратился в Верховного Пекана[7]), and so approached unsuspected (и таким образом приблизился незаподозренным; to suspect —подозревать) and talked with the old Beaver-woman (и побеседовал со старой Женщиной-Бобром). From her he learned (от нее он узнал) that his younger brother had been enticed into the Great Water (что его младшего брата заманило в Великую Воду: «был заманен в…»; to entice — соблазнять; переманивать) and destroyed by the monster of the deep (и уничтожило/убило чудовище глубин: «и убит чудовищем…»; deep — глубокий), Unk-tay-hee (Унк-тэй-хи). He-who-was-first-Created now turned himself into a King-fisher, and so approached unsuspected and talked with the old Beaver-woman. From her he learned that his younger brother had been enticed into the Great Water and destroyed by the monster of the deep, Unk-tay-hee. Thereupon he went down to the shore and changed himself into a tall pine overlooking the lake.

For many moons He-who-was-first-Created remained thus (в течение многих лун = месяцев Созданный Первым оставался так), until at last he beheld two huge forms (пока, наконец, он не узрел две огромные формы = два огромных тела; to behold) rising up in the midst of the waves (поднимающиеся среди волн; to rise up). For many moons He-who-was-first-Created remained thus, until at last he beheld two huge forms rising up in the midst of the waves. The monsters glided gradually toward the shore and lay basking in the sun at his feet, rocking gently with the motion of the quiet water. It was old Unk-tay-hee and his mate.

"Husband (муж /мой/)!" exclaimed the wife (воскликнула жена) of Unk-tay-hee, "for ages this has been our resting-place (целую вечность это было нашим местом отдыха; for ages — целую вечность; to rest — покоиться; отдыхать), and yet I have never seen this tree before (но, однако, я никогда не видела этого дерева раньше)!"

"Woman (женщина/жена), the tree has always been there (дерево всегда было здесь)!" returned the water monster (возразило/ответило водяное чудище).

"But I am sure (но я уверена) it was not here before (его не было здесь раньше)," she insisted (настаивала она).

"Husband!" exclaimed the wife of Unk-tay-hee, "for ages this has been our resting-place, and yet I have never seen this tree before!"

"But I am sure it was not here before," she insisted.

Then Unk-tay-hee wound his immense scaly tail (тогда Унк-тэй-хи обвил свой огромный/громадный чешуйчатый хвост; to wind; scale — чешуйка) about the giant pine (вокруг гигантской сосны) and tried to pull it out by the roots (и попытался вытащить ее у корней). The water foamed and boiled with his struggles (вода вспенилась и вскипела от его усилий), but He-who-was-first-Created stood firm (но Созданный Первым стоял крепко; to stand), and at last the monster gave up the attempt (и в конце концов чудище бросило попытку = сдалось; to give up — сдаться).

"There (вот)," he declared (он объявил), "I told you it had always been there (я сказал тебе, оно всегда было здесь)!" His wife appeared satisfied (казалось, его жена была удовлетворена; to appear — /по/казаться; to satisfy — удовлетворять), and presently the gentle waves (и постепенно спокойные волны) rocked them both to sleep (укачали обоих до сна; to rock to sleep — укачать, убаюкать).

Then Unk-tay-hee wound his immense scaly tail about the giant pine and tried to pull it out by the roots. The water foamed and boiled with his struggles, but He-who-was-first-Created stood firm, and at last the monster gave up the attempt.

"There," he declared, "I told you it had always been there!" His wife appeared satisfied, and presently the gentle waves rocked them both to sleep.

Then He-who-was-first-Created returned to his own shape (Созданный Первым вернулся в свое тело; shape — форма, очертание), and with his long spear (и длинным копьем) he stabbed each of the monsters (он ударил каждого из чудищ), so that with groans of pain (так что, стеная от боли: «со стонами боли») they dove down to their homes (они метнулись вниз к себе домой; to dive — нырять, погружаться) at the bottom of the great lake (на дно огромного озера), and the waters boiled above them (и воды вскипели над ними), and the foam was red with their blood (и пена была красна от их крови).

Then He-who-was-first-Created returned to his own shape, and with his long spear he stabbed each of the monsters, so that with groans of pain they dove down to their homes at the bottom of the great lake, and the waters boiled above them, and the foam was red with their blood.

The Daughter of the Sun (Дочь Солнца)
